The scent of jasmines and coconut oil filled the room as the children lined up. Happy, excited chatter in Kannada continued as they anticipated the first day of VBS. As I greeted the friendly faces, familiar and new, I smiled to myself. Yes, once again, it was the first day of VBS in Bangalore. Another week for me of renewing relationships, getting to know new children, and anticipating God working in their hearts.
Our Vacation Bible School consists of two classes- an English class and a Kannada class. While most of the team assists with the English class, Anjali and my parents teach the Kannada class through a translator. Each day is packed with a Bible lesson, singing time, memory verse, craft, and games. Our theme this year is "The Covenant Road"- an overview of how the Old Testament covenants point forward to Christ.
In spite of some initial uncertainty, VBS ran incredibly smoothly today! Because we have fewer English-speaking children than previous years, we were unsure whether the children would understand our theme. Yet, the children [at least, in the English class, where I was helping] listened very attentively and seemed to grasp the story [the covenant with Adam] and verse quite well. To me, this first day of VBS was such a wonderful reminder of God's power. When He is at work, nothing- not language barriers, not distracted children, not our weaknesses- nothing can hinder Him! We give thanks to our God for His mighty work in the hearts of these children, which extends far beyond what we can see or imagine!
